JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Security forces on Monday handed over more than 200 weapons seized during operations to the Disarmament of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) programme in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said.
Nangarhar police chief Brig. Gen. Fazal Ahmad Sherzad told Pajhwok Afghan News the arms and ammunition delivered to DIAG officials included Kalashnikovs, rifles, Pakistan-made pistols and others.
He said the weapons had been seized by security forces during a series of operations against militants and during direct engagement with insurgents and armed groups over the past three months.
The police chief said 35 individuals had been arrested and referred to judicial organs in connection with possessing illegal weapons. He claimed weapons were being smuggled into Nangarhar from Pakistan since long.
Deputy Governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal, praising the performance of security forces, expressed the hope that law and order situation would be improved in restive districts in near future.
Brig. Gen. Jauhar Dawlatzai, DIAG head in the eastern zone, said his department had been delivered heavy and small weapons worth 800 million afghanis last year.
