LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A newly-built military installation for the Afghan National Army (ANA)’s 215th Maiwand Corps has been inaugurated in southern Helmand province.

The facility, which cost $37 million and took two years to complete, was inaugurated in the Shorab area of Greshk district at a ceremony late on Sunday.

Gen. Syed Malok, the corps commander, told the ceremony the military base had 50 blocks, which would help overcome the shortage of buildings for the military personnel and streamline their activities.

Created in 2009, the Maiwand Military Corps have since been housed in buildings established by the UK in Shorab area.

Deputy Governor Ahmad Massoud Bakhtawar said he was happy over the inauguration of the compound and asked military leaders not to be negligent toward preservation of the facility.

He said civilian and military aid from foreign countries had effectively been used in Helmand, believing Afghan forces were poised enough to defend the country on their own.

The deputy governor urged donor countries to continue training and equipping Afghan forces.
