KABUL (Pajhwok): A new coalition has been formed by a dozen lawmakers in the Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of parliament, increasing the number of such blocs to nine.
A member of the newly-created “National Unity” group, Mohammad Hashim, who represents northern Faryab, told the house they had formed the coalition to protect “the national interests” and promote “national unity.”
He said their other objectives were increasing coordination between parliament and the government, defending people’s rights, accelerating efforts at achieving peace, and ensuring justice for all.
He said a lawmaker from western Herat province, Ghulam Farooq, had been appointed as head of the group, Kabul MP Farhad Saddiqi as his deputy and female lawmaker from southwestern Nimroz province, Fareshta, as secretary.
With the creation of this new coalition, the number of parliamentary groups in the lower house has surged to nine.
