KABUL prisoners were released while jail terms of 16 other female inmates were reduced from Badam Bagh prison of the central capital Kabul on Monday following a presidential decree, an official said.

An official at the Attorney General Office (AGO), Captain Aziz Ahmad Sarbaz, while addressing a news conference said the decree was announced by the president on the occasion of birthday celebration of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The inmates who were imprisoned for 20 years, their jail period had been reduced to one and half year, the period of prisoners charged with 10 years was reduced to one year while the term of inmates charged for five years reduced to six months, he said.

All the prisoners would get benefit from the decree and no one would be deprived, he added.

The prisoners were not allowed to talk to media but one inmate complained the decree would not be implemented in letter and spirit.

“They (government officials) are liars. Why they do not allow us to talk to media. The guards fear we will talk about problems we are facing here,” the prisoner said.

The prisoner complained about harsh behavior of guards and unhealthy food being provided to them.

But Sarbaz said that no prisoner was innocent and all of the jailed inmates were involved in various crimes.
