KABUL (Pajhwok): More than two dozen provincial council candidates failing to meet the lower age limit have been disqualified, the electoral watchdog announced on Sunday.

Independent Election Complaints Commission (IECC) Secretary Mohammad Nader Mohseni told Pajhwok Afghan News the 25 contenders were yet to attain the required age of 25 years.

Also the IECC spokesman, Mohseni said the decision on removing the provincial council hopefuls from the list of candidates was based on a scrutiny of their documents.

He added that the list of disqualified wannabes, hailing from different provinces, would be sent to the Independent Election Commission (IEC) later in the day.

As the process of document scrutiny continues, more candidates are likely to be struck off the list. The watchdog has indicated some of the 2,700 individuals with fake documents may be thrown out of the race.
