SHIBERGHAN/FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Six people, most of them children, lost their lives to severe cold and a blast in Jawzjan and Farah provinces, officials said on Tuesday.
Jawzjan deputy governor Abdur Rahman Mehmoodi told Pajhwok Afghan News four people, including three children, had died of harsh weather conditions.
He said heavy rains and snowfall had damaged hundreds of houses and blocked most roads in Shiberghan and other parts of the province.
A survey has been carried out to assess damages ahead of aid distribution to the affected families, the official said.
In Farah, four people went missing near the snow-bound Iranian border in Tapa Khwaharan area in Jawin district, the town’s administrative head, said.
Samadyar said the four wanted to cross the border into Iran on Monday when they went missing in the snow.
One of the missing persons was later found dead and the three others were yet to be traced, he said, identifying the dead as Aminullah, who died of severe cold.
Also in Farah, a child was killed and three of his family members wounded by a blast inside their home in Khwaja Issa village of Pusht Koh district late on Monday.
Pusht Koh district chief Abul Rahim Haidari said the family had brought home an unexploded ordinance while collecting firewood and the explosive went off after being put on fire, killing a child and wounding his mother and two brothers.
