Japan pledges $43m grant for airport project

KABUL (Pajhwok): Japan on Tuesday pledged $43 million in grant assistance for a project aimed at strengthening Security at the Kabul International Airport.

An agreement to the effect was signed between the Afghan foreign minister and Japan’s ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project is to expand and renovate the airport facilities.

The facilities include the International Passenger Building and providing equipments, such as X- Ray, metal detectors and buses. This will facilitate security checks and alleviate congestion.

The Japanese government, which has provided about $5 billion in assistance to Afghanistan Since 2001, is the second largest donor to the country behind the US, according to Foreign Minister Zarar Ahmad Usmani.

Ambassador Hiroshi Takahashi said: “To date, the government of Japan has provided over id=”mce_marker”00 million in assistance to the Kabul International Airport.”

He characterised the airport as the aerial gateway to Afghanistan from the world and funding for it a symbol of the friendship expressed by the people of Japan towards the Afghans.
