MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Civil society activists in northern Balkh province on Wednesday warned a shortage of ballot papers could deprive millions of people of casting their votes in the April elections — a concern dismissed by election officials.

Syed Mohammad Yazdanparast, who represents the civil society organisation Omaid Hamzysti, argued 20 million people had obtained voter cards across the country, but only 14 million ballot papers had been printed.

But Izzatullah Arman, the Balkh Independent Election Commission office head, ruled out the possibility of any ballot papers shortage on the voting day (April 5).

He said the election commission was fully prepared to hold the presidential and provincial council elections. He said as many as 8,700 individuals had so far issued voter cards in Balkh.
