PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Hundreds of people besieged the attorney’s office in northern Baghlan province on Monday during a protest rally against the arrest of a provincial council member.

Provincial council members, closing their office in protest, led the demonstrators who gathered in front of the attorney’s office in Pul-i-Khumri.

The angry protestors set tyres on fire and blocked the road leading to the attorney’s office in early morning, chanting slogans against the attorney.

They slammed the arrest of Jahangir Jawan, a provincial council member, by the attorney’s office as illegal.

One of the protestors, Mohammad Jawad, said Jawan had a dispute with a court official over a piece of land in the Tapa-i-Farhat area of the provincial capital.

He alleged the court official had forcibly occupied the land, which had been allotted to Jawan by the municipality.

Using his authority, the protestor said, the court official directed the attorney to detain the public representative.

The protestors vowed they would continue to take out rallies until the attorney was sacked and the public representative released.

Acting provincial council chief, Asadullah Shahbaz, confirmed closing the office in protest against their colleague’s detention.

Police chief Col. Sadiq Muradi said he was in contact with the attorney to release Jawan.

As the protest entered a third hour, the attorney’s office released Jawan, who told the protestors he had been arrested under a plot.
