WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): Expressing disappointment over the release of dangerous prisoners, the White House on Friday urged the Afghan government to make every effort that those freed did not commit new acts of violence and terror.

“We are disappointed … that the Afghan government has released detainees that we believe pose a continuing threat to coalition forces and to Afghans,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told his daily news conference.

He urged the Afghan government to make every effort that those released did not return to violence and terror and to immediately bring to justice those who did so.  He also called for an appropriate resolution of disputed cases.

Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said the prisoners’ release was not only unhelpful to the relationship that the US wanted to have with Afghanistan, but was also dangerous to the military mission there.

“Every day we continue to go after those enemies in Afghanistan that are targeting our forces, the forces of our allies and the Afghan people, and nothing’s going to change about that. And should one of these detainees rejoin the fight, they need to know that they do it at their own peril,” Kirby told reporters.

Carney also insisted on prompt signing of the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) because a troop presence beyond 2014 was obviously contingent upon the deal.

“And we are still not at a point where a decision has been made or can be made about what a post-2014 troop presence would look like, except to say that it would be much smaller and narrowly focused on counterterrorism and training in support of Afghan forces,” Carney said.
