KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): A capacity-building centre for doctors and health workers, a US-funded project, was inaugurated in the capital of southeastern Khost province on Sunday.

The centre in Khost City is part of USAID system capacity by increasing leadership, management and governance knowledge of healthcare providers, programme managers and policymakers.

Khost Public Health Director Dr. Hidyatullah Hamidi told Pajhwok Afghan News doctors in Afghanistan’s 34 provinces and those in neighbouring countries would benefit from short courses in the said areas at the centre.

Ministry of Public Health official Dr. Hidayatullah Sahak, who attended the inaugural ceremony, said the centre would play a crucial role in the delivery of better health services in the country.

He said there would be no regular classes, but workshops, seminars and conferences would be arranged at the centre, where doctors would share their experiences with each other.

He said the centre would help overcome problems in ensuring transperancy and accountability in the health system.

Deputy governor Abdul Wahid Patan thanked the Public Health Ministry for choosing Khost to build the training centre.

He said health authorities should do more to resolve problems being faced by common people in access to health services.

Meanwhile, a three-day workshop, involving a large number of health workers from eastern and southern province, was launched at the newly-opened centre.

The provincial public health director said around 30 individuals hailing from Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman, Logar, Ghazni, Paktia, Paktika and Khost provinces were attending the workshop.
