KABUL (Pajhwok): Senator Hafiz Abdul Qayyum has been appointed as new governor of eastern Nuristan province, an official said on Thursday.
President Hamid Karzai approved Qayyum’s appointment based on a recommendation from the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG).
IDLG spokesman Tawab Ghorzang, speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, hoped Qayyum would be able to bring good governance to the remote province.
The 38-year-old new governor, replacing Tamim Nuristani, hails from the Wama district of the province. He holds a master’s in Political Science.

On February 3, President Hamid Karzai removed Nuristani and two other officials for their role in the theft of wheat meant for distribution to residents.
