KABUL’s Ministry of Energy and Water on Thursday.

The finished power schemes will now be operated and maintained by Af-ghanistan’s national power company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS).

A press release issued by the German Cooperation with Afghanistan, said Eng. Shakeeb Ahmad Nessar, Chief Operations Officer of DABS after attending the ceremony thanked the German government for the support it provided to Afghanistan in the energy sector throughout the years.

The handover and operations of the new power schemes will benefit a total of 25,000 people in the Chal and Warsaj districts of Takhar.

Construction of the three renewable power schemes was recently completed with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

In partnership with the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water, the Afghan-German cooperation programme financed the three pilot projects in Takhar with a 500 kW mini hydropower scheme in Warsaj district providing electricity to 1,270 public and private customers, a 200 kW solar PV scheme in Chal Yatatoot district with 560 customers and a solar PV scheme in Chal Khanaqa serving 363 customers.

In addition to supplying electricity to the rural population, the power projects will also help the Ministry of Energy and Water collect data on the technical and commercial requirements of constructing and operating renewable energy power schemes in Afghanistan.

As part of Germany’s cooperation with Afghanistan, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been helping the Ministry of Energy and Water promote renew-able energy in Afghanistan since 2003.
