KABUL would export its carpets to the global market with an international standard certificate under an agreement signed on Sunday, officials said.

The agreement was signed between the Afghan Carpet Producers and Exporters Union and the National Standards Authority.

Popalzai Popal, the National Standards Authority head, said carpets were the country’s most significant export item, but their quality had sometimes been compromised.

He blamed the low quality on imported substandard raw materials used by the local industry.

Exasperated with the status quo, Popal said Afghan carpets had lost their place among international competitors as the crafts slipped to second position.

Happy with the agreement, Ismatullah, the Afghan Carpet Producers and Exporters Union head, hopped the accord would leave a positive impact on the quality of carpets produced in Afghanistan and retain the first position in the global market once again.

Under the agreement, the carpet industry has to maintain standards that meet international demand.
