KABUL (Pajhwok): Militants held 10 pro-government residents hostage in the Ghorak district of southern Kandahar province, a tribal elder said on Sunday, after reports said dozens of people have been kidnapped by suspected militants in eastern Nangarhar province.
Wishing anonymity, the elder in Ghorak district told Pajhwok Afghan News the gunmen abducted 10 local people for frequent travels to the provincial capital, Kandahar City, and attending government-sponsored meetings. He said the fate of those held captive remained unknown.
Kandahar police spokesman Zia Durrani, however, put the number of those kidnapped at four, saying efforts were ongoing to secure their release.
The incident unfolds after residents and officials in Nangarhar said dozens of residents had been kidnapped by insurgents in the Goshta district.
MP Faridoon Momand told Pajhwok Afghan News nearly 42 people were arrested by the Taliban and asked them cut off relations with the government.
