JALALABAD/KABUL (Pajhwok): Hundreds of people attended campaign rallies organised in support of presidential candidates Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Gul Agha Sherzai in eastern Laghman and the central capital Kabul on Thursday.

Participants of the rally in Laghman voiced support to Ahmadzai, a former finance minister. A campaigner for Ahmadzai, Haji Noor Mohammad, told the gathering the people of Laghman considered it an honour to support Ahmadzai, the world’s second top thinker.

He said their choice was Ahmadzai because with his wisdom and intelligence, he could prove a good president for the Afghans.

Writer and senior journalist, Lal Pacha Azmoon, who is also culture advisor to Ahmadzai, thanked the people of Laghman for declaring their support to Ahmadzai.

“During his tenure as head of the Security Transition Commission, Dr. Ahmadzai has closely observed problems in all provinces,” said Azmoon, who praised Ahmadzai as someone who had never been involved in corruption and bloodshed.

Ahmadzai’s campaign office head in the eastern zone, Ihsanullah Kamawal, told Pajhwok Afghan News the rally in Laghman was attended by more than one thousand people, including women.

In Kabul, three separate gatherings were held in support of presidential candidate Gul Agha Sherzai, a former governor.

Ten civil society groups, comprising around 500 members, announced their support to Sherzai by organizing a gathering in which Sherzai’s first vice presidential candidate Syed Hussain Almi Balkhi was present.

Balkhi told the gathering their team would open a new chapter in the history of Afghanistan if elected.

Separately, nearly one thousand women associated with three different civil society organisations announced their support to Sherzai.

Sherzai’s campaign office member Senator Sadiqa Balkhi said they would give women greater representation in future programmes.

Meanwhile, some more women voiced their support to Sherzai during a gathering. They called on Sherzai to give female education, rights and economy a top priority if he won the April 5 elections.
