KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Religious scholars in southeastern Khost province have demanded practical steps from both the Afghan government and the international community toward making peace talks with insurgents result-oriented.

The ulema Sardar Mohammad Zadran, a former Haqqani Network commander, in Khost City on Monday.

Maulvi Zadran said the government should expedite and take practical steps toward reviving the peace talks with militants.

He complained such direly needed efforts could not be made when it came to peace negotiations with the Taliban. He said religious scholars should be part of the peace drive if the government was really interested in making it a success.

Zadran, who reconciled with the government under its reconciliation programme, said the Afghan government should hold face-to-face talks with insurgents and meet their legitimate demands.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News he headed a number of former jihadi commanders in peace talks with senior Taliban leaders in Qatar.

About Taliban’s stance, he said they were ready for peace parlays with the Afghan government but they wanted their demands to be considered.

It is believed the gathering in Khost was arranged with an understanding with the Taliban but Maulvi Zadran did not say anything about this.

Maulvi Hanif Shah, HPC head in Khost, also criticised the government for the slow-moving peace process. The Afghan government and the HPC should step up efforts to work out a mechanism on inclusive and result-oriented peace process without further delay, he said.

The government should take ulema into confidence and involve them in negotiating peace with militants, he demanded.
