BAMYAN (Pajhwok): Civil society on March 10, 2001.

Dozens of civil society activists from Kabul and Bamyan provinces held a candle light vigil in front of the Buddhas— the two historical statues in Bamyan.

The large statue with a height of 55 metres and a small statue with a height of 33 metres were carved on mountain in the north of Bamyan city in the ancient Silk Road.

Rohullah Farogh, provincial director of human rights commission, said: “Destruction of the statues is violation of human rights and we request the government to prosecute the perpetrators.”

Mariam Sharifi, an organizer of the ceremony along with a cultural group lighted 80 lanterns beside the Buddha statue where poetry and folk music programmes were organized.

“We celebrated the historical importance of Buddha statues. We expressed abhor for the perpetrators behind the destruction of Buddha statues in Bamyan,” she added.
