UNSC extends UNAMA mandate for a year

WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The United Nations Security Council on Monday extended the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year.

 It stressed the importance of a sustainable democratic development in the country, with all Afghan institutions acting within their clearly-defined areas of competence.

In a unanimous resolution, the 15-membered council extended the UNAMA mandate till March 17, 2015.

It welcomed the continuing efforts of the Afghan government to advance the reconciliation process, including by the High Peace Council and the implementation of the Afghanistan Peace and Reintegration Programme.

The resolution called for strengthening local and regional networks of transportation to facilitate connectivity for economic development, stability and self-sustainability.

The Security Council expressed concern at the serious harm that opium cultivation, production, trafficking and consumption continued to cause to the security, development and governance of Afghanistan, as well as to the region and internationally.

In the 18-page resolution, the Security Council called on the United Nations to support the Afghan government’s National Priority Programmes covering security, governance, and justice, economic and social development.
