The two leaders met in The Hague on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit, which is being attended by a host of global leaders, including US President Barack Obama.
A senior State Department official said Kerry and Sharif emphasised their support for a policy of non-interference in Afghanistan by all countries in the region.
They reaffirmed their commitment to an Afghan-led reconciliation process and agreed that improved bilateral relations between Pakistan and India could bring stability and prosperity to the region, the official said.
He added Kerrey and Sharif also discussed their common interest in combating terrorist and extremist groups threatening both countries and the region.
They discussed the broad scope of common national security priorities including efforts to stem the tide of extremism, combat terrorism, strengthen their economic ties, and promote nuclear security, the official said.
The two leaders also talked about Pakistan’s engagement with the international community on nuclear safety and security issues and the ongoing regular discussions on these issues through the Security, Strategic Stability and Nonproliferation Working Group.
