KABUL (Pajhwok): More than 95,000 security personnel have been deployed across the country to ensure security for Saturday’s presidential and provincial elections, a military commander said on Tuesday.

Afghan National Army (ANA) Commander Lt. Gen. Murad Ali Murad told a news conference in Kabul the 60,000 forces included ANA soldiers and police. The current strength of ANA and police stands at 350,000.

Murad said Afghan forces were fully prepared to maintain security for the election. “Our security plan isn’t confined to the election day. We will do all we can to keep security till results are announced.”

Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman Zahir Azimi said the minister concerned recently visited some provinces, including Khost, Paktia, Paktika, Logar and Maidan Wardak. Based positive evaluations, he asked people to vote without fear.

“ANA and ANP have close coordination and militant attacks cannot scare people with violent attacks; Afghans have evinced a greater interest in participate in the election process,” Azimi added.

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has announced security for 90 percent of polling stations around the country had been ensured. Only 748 of 6,423 polling sites will remain closed due to security threats and other factors.
