President greets Saudi deputy crown prince

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday congratulated Prince Muqrin bin Abdul Aziz on his appointment as deputy crown prince of Saudi Arabia.

Karzai phoned Muqrin, King Abdullah’s half-brother, and greeted the Saudi royal family on behalf the Afghan government and people, the Presidential Palace said.

A statement from the presidency said Karzai praised as valuable King Abdullah’s decision. He also lauded Saudi Arabia’s role in promoting the Afghan peace process.

Muqrin’s appointment keeps the line of succession within the same generation of brothers born to the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, King Abdul Aziz.

Educated at the Royal Air Force College in the United Kingdom, Muqrin is a former Saudi spymaster. His appointment was announced on Thursday.
