TALUQAN, LASHKARGAH, KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Security forces shot dead five militants, including a commander, in cleanup operations in southern Helmand, northern Kunduz and Takhar provinces to bolster security ahead of Saturday’s vote, officials said Thursday.

Khalil Aseer, Takhar police spokesman, said a militant commander Qari Momin and another insurgent were killed by security forces in a clash in the Ashkmash district.

Around 215 polling stations had been established throughout Takhar, with two of the centres were declared insecure.

But Ghlam Hazrat Karimi, spokesman of 209 military corps in the north, said that efforts were underway to secure all polling centres till polling day.

Of 218 polling stations, 22 sites were said to be insecure in Kunduz but security forces assured to beef up security of all the insecure polling stations.

Officials of Afghan National Army (ANA) claimed killing of three militants in Kunduz in a gun battle with insurgents.

Gen. Ghulam Farooq Parwani, deputy commander of 215 Maiwand corps in Helmand province, ANA with the extended support of locals paved way for smooth elections in the province.
