ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Officials in Nimroz province on Friday assured elections would be conducted in a peaceful environment, with sensitive materials transported to all districts.

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) head for Nimroz Ahmad Shah Qanuni told Pajhwok Afghan News staff had been dispatched to five districts and remote areas.

On the other hand, provincial council candidate Mohammad Nader said 18 of 62 polling sites in the province were insecure and voting might not take place there.

He said observers had been deployed to only three of 11 polling sites in Dilaram district due to insecurity — a problem that also haunts Khashrod.

Nader added the government wanted to secure the areas, urging the IEC to ensure people’s participation in the elections.

But the provincial police chief said with people’s cooperation and understanding with tribal leaders, security had been ensured for all polling stations.

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Qasim Jangal, the 215th Maiwand Corps commander, said 100 soldiers would be deployed to Nimroz from southern Helmand province to beef up election security.
