KABUL (Pajhwok): Leading presidential runner Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday claimed preliminary election results were in his favour.
Addressing a news conference hours after voting closed, he praised the elections as a success, a step toward Afghanistan’s progress and prosperity.
He added people, braving security threats and inclement weather conditions, widely participated in the polls and cast votes for candidates of their choice. He also lauded security forces role in successful conduct of the vote.
However, the ex-foreign minister blasted the shortage of ballot papers in many polling stations. Many people had been unable to vote because of the shortage, he lamented.
His team has complained to the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) about the misuse of government resources in favour of one specific candidate.
Initial results show he is in the lead, according to Abdullah, who acknowledged the outcome was not final. The results would lead to peace and stability in the country, he hoped.
