KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): In an attempt to disrupt elections, Pakistani forces on Saturday fired rockets into three border districts of southern Kandahar province, officials said.

Governor Toryalai Weesa and police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq told reporters Pakistani forces had fired several rockets into Maroof, Arghistan and Shurabak districts.

Weesa said the shelling caused no casualties, and the voter turnout in Kandahar was beyond his expectations. Electoral materials were exhausted soon after the voting process began, he added.

There are 1, 300,000 illegible voters in Kandahar, but the IEC sent 550,000 ballot papers to the province.

Gen. Raziq said they had visited the localities hit by Pakistani shelling. One local police was killed in Maroof district while defusing a mine, he said, adding a soldier was wounded in Maiwand district as a result of a militant attack.

The governor said a woman had been arrested for carrying 20 voter cards and a tribal elder for encouraging people to vote for a particular candidate. A number of IEC workers were also arrested for filling out ballot papers for voters.
