Voting in landmark polls off to peaceful start

Apr 05, 2014 - 07:44

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Voting in the landmark presidential and provincial council elections started on a peaceful note at 7:00am throughout the country on Saturday, officials said.

The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) said at least 12 million voters would exercise their franchise. Long queues of voters could be seen outside polling stations, waiting for their turn.

A total of 6,845 polling stations were established throughout the country but 323 were added later on. Among them, security for 420 polling sites could not be ensured, officials said.

At least 400,000 security personnel have been deployed to protect the ballot. During the last three elections, 21 million voter cards had been distributed. Only 4 million received their cards this time.
