KABUL to devise a comprehensive plan for the creation of an independent committee to conduct university entrance tests, his office said on Tuesday.
Karzai issued the directives after a meeting with members of the Afghanistan University Lecturers’ Union at the Presidential Palace, a statement from the palace said.
It added Higher Education Minister Obaidullah Obaid was also present at the meeting, in which the lecturers called for the creation of an independent body to conduct entry tests outside of the ministry’s influence.
At the end of the meeting, President Karzai asked Obaid to evolve a plan for the creation of the proposed independent committee for bringing reforms to the entrance test system and conducting the exams. The president asked Obaid to prepare the plan as soon as possible and present it before the Cabinet for approval.
The presidential orders come amid complaints that entrance tests in most provinces had not been transparent this year. The test had to be cancelled and retaken in some provinces following allegations of fraud and other irregularities last time.
