NILI (Pajhwok): The prices of food items, especially of meat, have considerably increased in central Daikundi province, forcing residents to use vegetables instead, locals and officials said.
Over the past three weeks, prices of food items had increased in Nili City, where one kilogram of beef was being sold at the rate of 300 afghanis and similar quantity of mutton at 430afs.
Earlier, the prices of one kilogramme of mutton stood at 240 afghanis and 280 afghanis. At the same time, one kilogram chicken meat jumped from 220afs to 300afs.
Ali Gul, a local from Jozak village of Nili, said: “I cannot buy meat because I cannot afford.” He was a daily wage labour with five family members and it was difficult for him to eat meat.
There was no check and balance by the government or prices control mechanism, he complained.
Sarwar, another resident, said: “I was planning to buy meat but I cannot afford because of its high price.”
But a butcher Ghulam Husain said closure of link roads, transportation and rents were behind surge in prices of food items.
