Dangerous Maimana inmates shifted to Kabul

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): After a jailbreak that killed three police guards, 38 dangerous inmates have been shifted from the central jail in northwestern Faryab province to a prison in Kabul, an official said on Monday.

Officials on Friday said three Taliban insurgents escaped from the jail in Maimana using weapons smuggled into the facility. The jailbreak left three police guards and one fleeing inmate dead and a fourth guard injured.

Security officials said Director General of Prisons Abdul Alim Kohistani visited the prison on Sunday and investigated the incident from various angles.

Faryab police chief Col. Mohammad Naeem Andrabi told Pajhwok Afghan News an intelligence director and two other officers at the Maimana central jail had been sacked and referred to the Attorney’s Office for an investigation.

He said a delegation led by Kohistani ordered 38 dangerous inmates serving long-term sentences to be shifted from Maimana to Kabul.

“These inmates include some Taliban commanders and militants involved in making bombs and plotting terrorist attacks,” Andrabi said.

Civil Society Network head in Faryab Mohammad Amin Intezar accused Maimana jail officials of committing negligence, saying they had prior intelligence reports.

About 500 prisoners are being held in the jail, including 200 inmates who have links with militants.
