TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Work on 17 development projects has been launched in the capital and 10 districts of northeastern Takhar province, an official said on Friday.
The projects included retaining walls, buildings for schools and a culture centre, the provincial rural development director, Raz Mohammad Faiz, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the projects would be implemented in Taloqan, Baharak, Rustaq, Khawaja Bahawodin, Farkhar, Chal, Warsaj, Darqad, Chah Ab and Namak Aab districts.
Sixteen school buildings in Baharak, a gabion wall for the castle in Rustaq, buildings for 16 community schools in Khwaja Bahawodin, a hydropower dam with the capacity to produce 400 kilowatts of electricity in Farkhar were part of the projects, he said.
The remaining projects included the construction of a building for a culture centre in Chal district, retaining walls in the Khatayan area of Taloqan, in Khada Chaman area of Farkhar, a 130-metre retaining wall in Warsaj district, a defensive wall around the Darqad district centre and a road in Chal district, Faiz continued.
The rural development director said the projects were estimated to cost $4 million provided by Japan, the World Bank, India and funds from the Afghan government’s development budget.
He said the schemes would benefit nearly 20,000 families and would create work opportunities for 10,000 people, he said. The projects also included several roads in the 10 districts.
A resident Haseeb complained people in remote parts faced with numerous problems in the absence of roads, clean drinking water and health clinics.
However, he said the new projects would help resolve people’s problems to some extent.
The rural development director said the 17 projects included two schemes left over from last year and work on the rest was underway and would be complete by the end of this solar year.
