KABUL (Pajhwok): Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi on Sunday said the Afghan National Army (ANA) was fully prepared to maintain security for a runoff election across the country.

Various issues of national interest were discussed as President Hamid Karzai’s security team, the National Security Council (NSC), met under Karzai’s chairmanship at the Presidential Palace, a statement from the palace said.

At the meeting, Defense Minister Gen. Bismillah Khan Mohammadi thanked President Karzai for his continued support to Afghan security forces, particularly the ANA.

The defense minister said his ministry was adopting measures to strengthen and equip the ANA soldiers.

He expressed his satisfaction over the completion of all four phases of the security transition from foreign troops to Afghan security forces. He said his ministry was awaiting the final security switch to increase focus on border areas.

Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi, speaking on the occasion, said the ANA was all poised to adopt strict security measures if a runoff election was to be held.
