KABUL (Pajhwok): The election watchdog on Sunday extended by 24 hours the deadline for registering complaints against preliminary results of the presidential elections and thrown out votes.
Earlier in the day, the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) announced presidential candidates could submit their complaints until 7pm (Sunday).
But IECC spokesman Nader Muhseni told Pajhwok Afghan News they had extended the deadline until 7pm Monday after requested so by candidates and civil society groups.
Another reason behind the extension, he said, was that the Independent Election Commission (IEC) had not yet released information about the preliminary results.
He said the IEC should release the details as soon as possible in order to enable candidates to register their complaints in the light of that information.
The preliminary results declared a day earlier put Abdullah Abdullah in the lead with 44.9 percent of the votes and his main challenger Ashraf Ghani in the second place with 31.5 percent.
