MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) officials on Wednesday said it had discovered 2,400 depots of weapons and 11,000 different kinds of arms in northern Afghanistan.

DIAG chief for the northern zone, Gen Abdul Manan, told Pajhwok Afghan News the process had begun in 2004.n He said that 185 irresponsible commanders had since been disarmed.

He added 2,400 depots of different weapons along with 11,000 arms had been discovered in different areas while 18 districts in the north had been declared weapons-free.

But the police chief for northern Balkh province was not satisfied with the DIAG performance. Gen. Abdur Rahman said he had handed over 21 weapons to the DIAG programme. “The disarmament process is not proceeding as well as expected.”
