May 01, 2014 - 13:21

KHOST CITY/FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): At least five policemen and 11 militants were killed when dozens of insurgents mounted attacks on security posts in southeastern Khost and northeastern Badakhshan provinces, officials said on Thursday.

Mubarez Zadran, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News four policemen and three militants were killed when dozens of insurgents stormed on a security check-post in the Alisher district of Khost province.

He said militants attacked the check-post jointly manned by the Afghan National Police (ANP) and border police in Tarzi town on the outskirts of the district.

Heavy and light arms were used by both sides during the clash, which erupted at around 9:00pm and lasted until midnight. Two ANP and as many border police officials were killed, while four policemen suffered injuries.

Around 150 rebels were involved in the attack, he said, adding three militants were killed and a fourth arrested by police.

Muhammad Basir, an eyewitness, said he heard sporadic gunshots for hours. In the morning, he saw three dead bodies on the road close to the check-post.

Talibaninfo-icon spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed killing seven policemen and injuring a number of others during the gunbattle. He said militants had captured the check post.

In northeastern Badakhshan province, eight militants and a policeman were killed and a Taliban-designated governor injured along with his four accomplices during a clash.

The fighters stormed a border police post in the Tiragan village of Warduj district late on Wednesday, the governor’s spokesman said.

Ahmad Naveed Frotan told Pajhwok Afghan News a Taliban commander, Mullahinfo-icon Hafiz, was also among the dead. Four militants, including a shadow governor for Badakhshan, Qari Fasihuddin, sustained injuries in the firefight.

Abdul Samad, a local, said the clash was still underway. Civilians stayed unhurt during the battle but the road to his village from Warduj district had been blocked due to insecurity, he added.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed tens of Afghan security forces, including an Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander, Khalil, were killed and a police post captured.
