WASHINGTON (Pajhwok) US President Barack Obama on Friday expressed his condolences over the landslide in Afghanistaninfo-icon, where hundreds of people were feared dead and missing in the tragic incident trigged by heavy rains.

“I want to say on behalf of the American people that our thoughts are with the people of Afghanistan who have experienced an awful tragedy,” Obama told reporters in the Rose Garden of the White House at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“We are seeing reports of a devastating landslide of top of recent floods. Many people are reported missing. Rescue efforts are underway,” he said.

“Just as the United States has stood with the people of Afghanistan through a difficult decade, we stand ready to help our Afghan partners as they respond to this disaster, for even as our war there comes to an end this year, our commitment to Afghanistan and its people will endure,” Obama said at the start of the conference.

Obama and Merkel addressed the news conference after a meeting at the Oval Office of the White House where they discussed a range of issues. The talks were dominated by developments in Ukraine and Russian actions in the country.
