JALALABAD (Pajhwok): With water level in Alishang River rising, Mehtarlam, the capital of eastern Laghman province, and adjacent villages are facing a looming flood threat, an official warned on Saturday.
The Alishang River was flooded in recent days, destroying tens of acres of crops, Sarhadi Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He warned almost 19 villages would be submerged if floods broke the Tomand Dam.
He said central authorities had been informed to help expedite rehabilitation work at the dam. In 2010, Alishang River had inundated four villages following devastating floods.
