KABUL (Pajhwok): Following presidential decree on the eve of Mujahidin’s Victory Day, at least 244 prisoners were released from the notorious Pul-i-Charkhi prison on Sunday, an official said.
Last week, President Hamid Karzai issued a decree under which some military and non-military prisoners should be set free from the country’s jails while some inmates’ detention term reduced.
Attending prisoners’ release ceremony inside the prison, Syed Murad Sharifi, chief of oversight on Supreme Court’s verdict, said the decree was applicable to all prisons, including Bagram jail.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News the decree would be implemented in three phases throughout the country, including the capital Kabul.
