KABUL (Pajhwok): The free media support organisation, NAI, on Sunday announced recording 78 cases of violence against journalists throughout the country in 2013.

NAI Director Sadiqullah Tawhidi said six journalists had been killed, four injured, nine arrested, 35 maltreated and 24 others threatened since May 3, 2013.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark International Press Freedom Day, he alleged the government was directly involved in 50 cases of violence against journalists, Taliban in eight, warlords in five and unidentified people in 10.

Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Simeen Ghazal Hasanzada praised media’s role in the prevailing circumstances.

Abdul Hamid Mubarez, the Afghanistan National Journalists Union (ANJU), said people should not think that press freedom had been gifted by Americans. Afghans mounted a struggle for it almost a decade ago, he concluded.
