WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): New Afghan Ambassador to Canada Sham Lall Bathija on Tuesday presented his letters of credence to Canadian Governor General David Johnston at a ceremony in Rideau Hall, Ottawa.
At a meeting that followed the official ceremony, Bathija conveyed to the governor general the best wishes of President Hamid Karzai and hoped for further strengthening relations between the two countries.
Bathija thanked the Canadian people and government for their comprehensive support for stability and reconstruction over the last 12 years, paying particular tribute to the memory of the 162 Canadians killed in his country.
Johnston expressed his condolences on the horrific landslide, which killed about 2,500 people in Badakhshan province. He assured that Canada would not spare any effort and assistance in such tragedies to the government and people of Afghanistan.
He also showed a keen interest in events unfolding in Afghanistan, especially the successful presidential elections, in which a large number of women participated.
