MPs ask Karzai to sack Kabul mayor until Saturday

KABUL on Wednesday asked President Hamid Karzai to sack the Kabul mayor by Saturday, warning lawmakers would take their own decision in case the official was not removed.  

Seeking the immediate sacking of the mayor and several other municipality officer, several Wolesi Jirga members and Kabul residents protested for a fourth day on the trot in front of the municipality today.

They accused the mayor of involvement in land grab, corrupt practices and issuing permits for the construction of multistorey buildings in violation of rules, as well as execution of substandard roads.

But Nawandesh, rejecting the allegations, has accused the MPs of trying to blackmail him after he rejected their inordinate demands. However, he did not explain the illegal demands.

A lower house member from southeastern Khost province, Mirbat Khan Mangal, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Wolesi Jirga discussed the ongoing protest against the mayor.  

After a lengthy debate, the house administrative board urged the president to take action until Saturday. If Karzai did not fire Nawandesh, the assembly would explore other ways of dealing with the issue, he added.

“Lawmakers may shut the Wolesi Jirga doors or exercise some other option after Saturday,” he continued, saying that some MPs even suggested measures against the president if he did not act positively.

Mangal’s colleague from Kabul Abdul Qadir Zazai, also one of the protestors, claimed all members wanted the mayor to be fired. “If our demand isn’t met until Saturday, we explore other ways…”
