KABUL (Pajhwok): Hundreds of people on Monday staged a protest rally in Kabul, calling for an end to a 10-day sit-in by some lawmakers and their supporters to allow the municipality to resume its activities.

Municipality staffers have been on leave since May 3, when some Wolesi Jirga members launched a protest against Mayor Younus Nawandesh, accusing him of involvement in land-grab, corrupt practices and issuing permits for multistorey buildings, as well as execution of substandard roads.

Nearly 400 people, including individuals with disabilities, staged a protest in front of the Eidgah Mosque, asking the government to reopen the municipality’s offices as their closure had created many problems for citizens.

One of the protestors, Abdul Rahim, told Pajhwok Afghan News “We support neither the mayor nor the Wolesi Jirga members. We want the lawmakers to call off their strike and let the municipality resume work and solve people’s problems.”

He said all municipality workers, including road cleaners, had stopped working and people visiting the municipality returned without their problems being solved.

Hasib Aryan, another protesting resident, said five million people in Kabul were deprived of civic services like city cleanliness and construction projects as a result of the sit-in by lawmakers.

He asked President Hamid Karzai to immediately intervene and resolve the problem and not let anyone to disrupt the situation for personal interests.

The protestors issued a resolution that asked President Karzai and officials concerned to take action and to bring to justice land grabbers, mafia groups, law violators and those creating hurdles to development projects in Kabul.
