JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least 25 militants have been killed during an operation in the Khogyani district of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said the ongoing operation was aimed to eliminate insurgents from Khogyani. Several commanders were among the 25 killed.

Provincial police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal said the operation was being conducted by Ministry of Defense Special Forces and police.

He added the Wazir area of the district had been purged of militants. Security forces seized 24 weapons and detained some suspected fighters.

A resident of the area, Syed Agha, said the operation focused on a Taliban stronghold. Security forces bombarded the hideout.

But Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, denied any military operation in Khogyani.

Elsewhere, four Uzbek militants, including a commander known as Qari Zaman, were killed during a clash in Faryab province.

The clash occurred in the Qush Mustafaqul area of Andkhoi district, police spokesman Syed Massoud Yaqubi said.

District chief, Sultan Sanjar, said Qari Zaman was a key member of the Tahir Yuldash group. He was involved in torturing area people.
