KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid on Thursday called on traders and well-off people to provide more aid to victims of the May 2 landslide that claimed hundreds of lives and buried an entire village in northeastern Badakhshan province.

Karzai made the call during his fortnight radio address, saying the survivors in the Aab-i-Barik village of Argo district needed more assistance on an urgent basis.

He said such natural disasters were common in Afghanistan and could strike any anytime anywhere. Donors and the nation should be quick in helping those affected.

“We observed all government institutions, aid organisations and people from different parts of the country rushing to Badakhshan to rescue the affected families. It was another example that showed the Afghan nation is united.”

He said the aid extended to Badakhshan people illustrated the power of the people.

“Though people from different regions of the country have provided humanitarian aid to the Argo residents, I yet again ask wealthy countrymen, traders and relief organizations to further assist the families in Aab-i-Barik village that is ruined.”
