NIELI (Pajhwok): A girl committed suicide after her family disallowed her to marry the man she liked in southwestern Daikundi province, an official said Saturday.
Human rights activist Halim Bashardost told Pajhwok Afghan News the 18 years old Roshan, frustrated by her family’s decision, consumed poison that led to her death.
She said her lover Nisar Ahmad also ate some poisonous substance to commit suicide after the girl’s death. But he was taken to hospital for medical treatment in time.
Bashardost remarked: “Families often hurt youth sentiments by interfering in their choices with regard to marriage. In such cases, families are responsible for suicide.”
A relative of Nisar said the girl’s brother was opposed to the proposal.
Daikundi police chief, Col Mohammad Asif Sherzai, said the victim’s brother had been detained and the incident was under investigation.
