KABUL pulled off their first-ever triumph at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup, thrashing Turkmenistan 3-1 in the Maldives.
Afghanistan Football Federation official Ali Kazimi told Pajhwok Afghan News the national squad shot into lead in the 45th minute of the first half when Islam Amiri scored a goal.
Arsh Attayee doubled the lead in the 62nd minute, with Faisal Shaista scoring a third goal in the 85th minute in the action-packed Group B encounter at the Hithadhoo Stadium on Thursday.
Suleyman Muhadov pulled the only goal back for Turkmenistan, but after goalkeeper Nikita Gorbunov and defender Serdar Annaorazov were both sent off for the two-time runners-up.
Afghanistan’s interim coach Erich Rutemoller said: “There were a lot of critical situations and a lot of emotions. I was disappointed with the first half because we made too many mistakes. We could not build up attacks and gave the ball away too easily.”
