KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A senior police officer on Sunday died of the wounds he sustained in a suicide attack in the capital of southern Kandahar province, an official said.

Abdul Wadood Jaju, Kandahar City’s 8th police district deputy chief, was critically wounded when a suicide attacker blew himself up near his car in the limits of the 9th police district in the afternoon, said Zia Durrani, Kandahar police spokesman.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the blast happened in the Dabaro Pul area and that the attacker was on foot.

The attacker detonated his explosives as he approached Jaju’s car, seriously injuring him. The police commander was rushed to the Mirwais Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Durrani said no one else got hurt in the attack.

Besmillah, an eyewitness, said he was on his way home when a powerful blast occurred, jerking the area.

The Taliban said the police official was killed as part of their spring offensive.
