KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday returned from New Delhi, where he attended the inauguration ceremony for the new Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A statement from the Presidential Palace in Kabul said Karzai met Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday morning at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi, with both leaders discussing bilateral relations.

At the meeting, Karzai congratulated Modi on his party’s landslide victory in the world’s largest elections and wished him further successes in future.

Modi thanked Karzai for participation in his oath-taking ceremony and appreciated Afghan forces’ prompt response to an organised suicide attack on the Indian Consulate in western Herat province.

Modi said relations between India and Afghanistan were historic and that India would enhance cooperation with Afghanistan under the strategic agreement.

After his meeting with Modi, President Karzai went on to meet his Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee and other high Indian officials, the statement concluded.
