KABUL Lawyer Union (ALU) on Wednesday said the term of President Hamid Karzai had expired on May 21 and his stay in the presidency had since been illegal.

Mohammad Ashraf Rasoul, a member of the ALU, criticised the Independent Election Commission (IEC) for what he called an unfair and inconclusive election.

The IEC, he said, had failed to control expenditure by candidates. The commission was unable to ensure provision of ballot papers to voters in a proper way, he complained.

He asked the panel to ensure a free, fair and transparent second round of the presidential election. He said Karzai had been working illegally over the past six five days after completing his term on May 21.

But the IEC Spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor insisted the election process had been heading in a transparent way and the electoral body’s role had been lauded nationally and internationally.
