SHARAN (Pajhwok): At least 27 militants, including two notorious commanders, have been killed and another injured in airstrike and clashes in southeastern Paktika province, officials said on Saturday.
Maj. Gen. Nabi Jan Malakhel, provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News ISAF overnight airstrike on a number of militants the other day on the outskirts of Omani district left several militants dead.
“At least 22 rebels, including a notorious commander Hamas, were killed. In addition, Taliban’s two explosive packed vehicles were completely destroyed in the air raid conducted by ISAF,” the police chief added.
The insurgents were planning to carry out big sabotage attacks to scuttle the landmark presidential runoff vote, he noted.
Separately, he said four militants had been killed in a grapes orchard in the district when their own mine exploded prematurely.
Police, he said carried out cleanup operation in Khairbeen locality on the outskirts of Yusufkhelu district the other day. A notorious militants’ commander Kabir alias Hilal who was Taliban’s designated chief for Sharan, the capital of the province, had been killed and his colleague suffered injuries.
During the course of offensive, police had recovered motorbikes and a large number of arms and ammunition from the rebels.
However, Taliban have yet to comment on the incident.
